"True to his nature, Gragas replied with a diplomatic headbutt, setting off a brawl matched only in the legends of the Freljord." Riot's biography of Gragas is the shortest route in Runeterra from a personal vice to a regional alliance: a man wanders into a peace negotiation because he is drunk, wrecks it because he is insulted, and saves it because everyone likes his beer.
Who they are
The biography opens on a ranking. The only thing more important to Gragas than fighting is drinking, and his thirst for something stronger has sent him after the most potent and unconventional ingredients he can find for his still. He is impulsive and unpredictable, as happy cracking heads as kegs, and drinking with him is described as a risky proposition. The problem is his own body: a constitution so massive that no ale gets him properly drunk. One night, with every keg drained and the thirst still there, he had an idea instead of the usual barstool and vowed to brew the ultimate ale himself.
The search took him to the Freljord, where the promise of the purest arctic water led him into uncharted glacial wastes. Lost in a blizzard, he stumbled on a great howling abyss and found, in it, a flawless shard of ice unlike anything he had seen. It did not melt. It gave his lager properties the biography calls incredible, and it kept the mixture at serving temperature, which the text lists as a handy side effect. Under the spell of the new brew he set off for civilisation to share it.
The first gathering he found was a negotiation going badly: two tribes discussing an alliance with Ashe. Ashe welcomed the interruption, the other warriors did not, and when they called him a drunken oaf he headbutted one of them. The brawl that followed is the one the biography compares to the Freljord's legends. When the fallen woke, Ashe proposed a friendly drink as an alternative to fighting, and two tribes that had been on the brink of war bonded over Gragas' brew instead. He was hailed a hero. He was also still sober by his own standards, so he went back out onto the tundra, looking for the ingredients of what the text calls Runeterra's perfect pint.
Where they belong
Riot's faction pages put Gragas in the Freljord, and the biography is careful about the word "brought": his quest brought him there in search of water, and the text never says where he was born. He is a Freljordian by accident and by acclaim. No race is listed for him on Riot's pages.
Riot lists four related champions:
- Ashe: the one leader in the room who welcomed him. She turned his brawl into a drink and his brew into an alliance, and the biography says the moment would shape the future of the Freljord.
- Tryndamere: not named in Gragas' biography. The link Riot draws is the Freljord, not a scene in the text.
- Braum: not named either.
- Jax: not named, and nothing in the biography would put them in the same tavern, so we do not invent it.
In the Riot MMO, as a guess
This is speculation. Gragas is a quest-giving character of the gathering kind, and the biography has already written the quest: a brewer who needs ingredients that do not exist yet, sends people into glacial wastes for them, and pays in something you drink. Every MMO with a crafting system has a version of that character, and few have one with a stated goal he can never reach, which is the part that keeps a questline open indefinitely. He is not a boss, though the brawl is the obvious mechanic: a fight that ends with everyone waking up and nobody dead. The unmelting shard is the loose end a designer would pull first, since the region's own account of ice that does not melt is the subject of its hub article. Whether a champion can run a bar at all is part of the question in will champions be playable.
What we do not know
Whether the era the game chooses, the open question in when is the Riot MMO set?, finds Gragas alive and still wandering the tundra. The biography leaves him mid-search, undated.
Where he came from before the Freljord. The biography says his quest brought him there and nothing about the road before it, and Riot has not said.
